Ted Baker was born in Long Beach, California. He earned his High School diploma in 1951 from Long Beach Polytechnic. Baker was the school's cartoonist and a photographer for it's newspaper and literary publications.
Ted received an A.A. in 1954 from Long Beach City College, and a B.A. from U.C.L.A. in 1956. Starting in 1956 he served 2 years in the United States Navy as a seaman. From 1958-1965 Baker taught full-time as an art teacher at Los Angeles High School. In 1962 he entered the M.F.A. program at Claremont Graduate School. In the Fall of 1965 Ted began teaching art classes at Scripps College. Baker became a full-time Instructor at Scripps in 1966 and taught there until 1968.  While teaching at Scripps he was also a Staff Associate at C.G.S., teaching Art Education K-12 part-time through 1971.
In the Fall of 1968 Ted was hired at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California. His most inspiring times were when he taught summer classes in art history from 1974-1984. These classes toured Eastern and Western Europe granting lower-division college units through the auspices of Orange Coast College. In 1979, Ted took on the position of The Dean of Fine Arts at O.C.C. where he spent 30 years, retiring in 1999.
Baker has a wide range of artistic talents including music. He is a student of the clarinet and has performed with the O.C.C. Wind Ensemble since 1995. In addition to playing the clarinet Ted continues to paint and explore his amazing ability to capture the motion and power of water with his passionate brush strokes.
Ted Baker has consistently exhibited his paintings across the nation throughout the 1960's, 70's, and in the current decade. In 2010, Claremont Graduate University awarded him with the honor of Alumni of the Year.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

MY SUBJECT IS WATER: SHORELINES, ESTUARIES, BAYS, RIVERS, STREAMS, FOUNTAINS, AND EVEN PUDDLES CAN PRESENT AN IDEA FOR MY DEPARTURE INTO THE MEDIAS. I MAKE A DRAWING OR TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS ON SITE, AND THESE IMAGES BECOME MY REFERENCES WHILE WORKING IN MY STUDIO. AS THE PAINTINGS DEVELOP, THE IMAGES CREATE THEIR OWN REALITY AND BECOME A PERSONAL MEDIUM FOR MY VISUAL DIALOGUE WITH YOU.
